A few thank you cards

Michael Raffety

Nov. 19, 2010

Before the holidays catch us up in the annual whirlwind I thought I’d take a moment to send out some thank-you cards, with my usual bow to late Night Show host Jimmy Fallon, who invented the format. No, I can’t sing like he can and I don’t even claim to be as funny as he is.

I’d like to thank Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai for  figuring out how to get bags of money from the Iranians. Maybe the Persians can take over the job of keeping the Taliban out.

I’d like to thank President Obama’s Deficit Commission for the brilliant idea to reduce  Social Security benefits for those who paid the most into the system.

I’d also like to thank the last Republican congressional majority who shined on President George W. Bush’s proposal to give people control over their Social Security accounts — a personal lock box.

I’d like to thank the scientific geniuses in Silicon Valley who contributed three times the amount of money supporters spent on Proposition 23, which would have suspended the state’s global warming law until the unemployment rate hit 5.5 percent. Since global warming is a product of computer modeling and anecdote it is only right that computer programmer whizzes like the Google founder keep us politically correct.

And thanks to Gov.-elect Moonbeam, who is going pay for lots of  “green jobs” with all the money he is going to save by closing the $25 billion state deficit.

And thank you President Obama for giving $500 million and a campaign visit to a solar panel manufacturer who was building a factory in the Bay Area. After you left the company laid off 17 percent of its workforce and gave up on the new factory, leaving 1,000 “green jobs” in fantasy land.

Thank you El Dorado County Board of Supervisors for saving the senior programs without asking why the seniors in El Dorado Hills pay less on the average for lunch than the seniors in Diamond Springs or El Dorado.

Thanks to the county CAO for telling the board you are retiring before their next meeting, which is Dec. 7, the day after your retirement date.

Thanks Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and President Obama for taxing drug companies and medical device companies to help pay for your health plan. We didn’t need any new medical devices or new drugs.

Oh, and ditto for passing the Obamacare bill so we and House Speaker Pelosi could find out what’s in it.

And thanks President Obama for informing us during the campaign what the free enterprise system is: “The basic idea is that if we put our blind faith in the market and we let corporations do whatever they want and we leave everybody else to fend for themselves, then America somehow automatically is going to grow and prosper.”

Yeah, that is a good idea. Try it. You’ll like it.
